Coaching vs. Therapy

There is a difference between coaching and therapy.

Depending on where you are in your recovery, you may find tremendous benefits from working with either kind of helping professional.

Therapy Session

Life coaching is not therapy, counseling, nor mentorship. Life coaching assist in filling in the gaps and providing clarity to the path from where someone is now, to where they want to be. It is a collaboration between the life coach and the client, that is designed to help the client explore their options, focus on their goals, and create a personalized action plan that aims to help clients discover their own motives and goals, and assist them in finding the best path forward.

Therapists assess, diagnose, and treat mental illness. As such, therapists often focus their work on identifying and reducing symptoms. A therapist, as it is used in the mental health world, typically means a psychotherapist, one who has been trained in using psychotherapeutic techniques to treat mental illness. Therapists use a wide range of theories and perspectives in that treatment. Many U.S. states consider psychologists, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors to be “psychotherapists” under state law, with some states adding other license types to that list. Psychotherapy is the specific field of work that emerges from psychology, the study of the mind.
